A major house extension had resulted in a wide but shallow outdoor space at this garden in Pinner, Middlesex. The main requirement was to provide design continuity between the interior kitchen/diner, translating its clean and contemporary lines to the exterior. As the garden sloped from left to right, the garden design exploits this for added interest resulting in a split-level garden. It was also important to capture the afternoon sun while at the same time provide screening from neighbouring properties.
The garden was divided into two distinct spaces: the upper level for dining, featuring a hardwood deck, and the lower level for relaxation and to make the most of the afternoon sun. Taking advantage of the garden’s changes in ground levels, steps were installed to lead from the upper dining deck to the lower patio which was paved in a smooth sandstone. Contemporary raised beds were built and planted with evergreen perennials, grasses, and tall bamboos for screening.
