Hit the deck

Garden decking comes in so many different styles these days, from traditional timber through to sophisticated composites and porcelain planks, that we are truly spoilt for choice. It has become a versatile design feature that can help define how we live outdoors. Whether you’re creating a dedicated space for a hot tub, a quiet corner for morning coffee or a sociable space for summer gatherings, garden decking can be used to bring warmth, texture and individuality to your outdoor space. It is particularly good for dealing with gardens on multiple levels or awkward, sloping sites. With such a wide range of products to choose from, ranging from the real thing to faux or lookalike products, you're really only limited by your imagination. Different size boards, colours, finishes and laying patterns, can add a touch of bespoke style, while warm tones, such as slate grey or soft brown, can be used to blend beautifully with your outdoor aesthetic and other garden accessories.

When it comes to choosing which decking material to go for, it’s worth considering how you want your space to feel and function. Real timber options, such as ipe or teak, offer a rich finish and longevity but will need a fair amount of aftercare and maintenance if they are to continue to look their best. Composite decking boards, usually made from recycled materials, is a great low-maintenance choice with strong eco credentials and usually come with a manufacturer's warranty. Also worth considering is the faux decking board made from porcelain. We're probably used to seeing such products indoors and there's now a range of outdoor porcelain deck planks that offer the benefits of low-maintenance and can be used to seamlessly link interior with the exterior in a single product (albeit made to be suitable for outdoor use in terms of frost- and slip-resistance).

So, why should decking warrant a place in your garden design? Quite simply, decking brings a host of practical and aesthetic benefits to garden spaces. It’s a brilliant way to introduce structure and zones, especially in gardens with uneven ground levels. Raised decks can create natural transitions between indoor and outdoor areas, while multi-level designs help define spaces for dining, relaxing, or entertaining. The warmth of timber or the sleekness of composite boards adds texture and contrast to planting schemes, making the space feel more curated and inviting. Decking also offers flexibility - whether you’re integrating lighting, seating, or a full-blown outdoor kitchen - it adapts beautifully to your garden style. With the right materials, it’s a low-maintenance solution that enhances year-round usability and, when used creatively, can really enhance your outdoor experience.
