This small 85m2 slightly sloping, north-facing rear garden suffered from poor lawn, a very small patio and oversized raised brick bed. The design objective was to bring the garden bang up to date giving it a modern, clean and spatious look. The garden still needed to be practical to cater for the whole family, including six grandchildren, and main access via a rear garden gate. Artificial lawn replaced the turf delivering a clean, low-maintenance play surface while porcelain pavers were used for the raised dining patio, steps and pathway. The new patio had to be large enough to accommodate a ten-seater table and chairs while not impeding foot traffic via the garden gate.
The design also had to include certain elements which were of sentimental value. Specifically, a large automaton, Father William, was to be given pride of place as a unique focal point. A display plinth, clad in the latest thin ceramic panels to mimick the look of Corten steel, was built with a rear mirror enabling the automaton to be viewed from all sides when rotated. Discrete outdoor spotlights were used to uplight the automaton and add depth to planted borders. Planting comprises a mix of cottage-garden favourites including Nepeta, Lavander, Geranium and Japanese Anemones with clipped evergreen Ilex topiary spheres used to flank the porcelain steps.
