Water in the garden

Water can be a very effective element in the garden, providing the combined qualities of movement, sound and reflection. As such, it can be tailored to suit any type of garden, however large or small. Such features tend to fall into two main types: formal and informal, though the two styles can and do overlap. Water features can take many forms ranging from naturalistic ponds, pools and water falls to the more contemporary and architectural featuring water blades, walls and bowls.

Safety is often a key consideration, especially if there are likely to be small children around. There's a huge variety of off-the-shelf, self-contained water features that are both stylish and child-friendly. However, if you're looking for something more individual then having a bespoke water feature designed that will complement the garden design is definitely the way to go, giving you more options on materials, style and size.

When deciding on the type of water feature for your garden it's important to consider the overall look of the house and garden and how the water feature will sit within it. This is particularly relevant when it comes to the scale and position of a water feature. Match the water feature to the space you have available and always think about how it will be maintained to ensure it continues giving pleasure for many years after its installation.
