Pergolas and arches

A pergola or arch is an easy way to add a new dimension to your garden. They can fit easily into almost any size of garden. Use them to frame a view, specimen plant, garden ornament – or simply to walk, sit or stand under. These structures can be used to create mood and atmosphere – or even to make a bold statement. Here are a few things to consider before deciding where to position such a structure for maximum effect.

Location, location

Don’t make the mistake of making the pergola or arch the focal point. These structures need to have a purpose if they are to work well so think carefully about its location in the overall garden. A pergola or arch should lead somewhere if it is to be both practical and successful. Similarly with arches, there is little point having an arch to walk through if you can still walk around it!

Outdoor room with views

Always think about how the pergola or arch can be used to frame a view, whether it’s the landscape beyond, a point on the horizon, or a special focal point. A focal point could be a bench, a statue or garden art, a tree or specimen plant. Give this due consideration when working out the purpose of the structure and how it integrates with its surroundings.

Make a statement

Rules are there to be broken. So long as you follow the basics there is no reason why the structure cannot also be a design feature in its own right – though always with purpose. Also, don’t be limited to structures in traditional timber. Be daring and consider other materials such as powder-coated metal or steel wire to create an open, contemporary structure.

To plant or not to plant?

We are used to thinking of pergolas and arches with climbing plants. If you’ve visited Kew Gardens you’ll have seen the beautiful rose walk pergola. However, if you have a contemporary garden, don’t feel you have to clothe it with climbing roses. Sometimes less is actually more, particularly if you have the right pergola in the right place!
