Japanese-inspired garden design plan

Japanese-inspired Garden

The client wanted to transform this small, shady garden taking the Japanese-style garden as its inspiration. The existing expanse of lawn was completely removed and replaced with rose-tinted gravel and smooth, polished red pebbles. Granite spheres, or ishi booru, were used to complete the effect with their spherical shape being echoed by adjacent evergreen box balls that were used to frame either side of a brick-edged pathway that leads to a round seating area.

Acers, azaleas, bamboos and grasses were selected for their Asian origins, while herbaceous perennials, such as penstemons and shade-loving hellebores and ferns, add colour, texture and year-round interest. Low-growing, carpeting plants link the rectangular and the round garden areas. A small pagoda acts as a focal point while bespoke containers add to the garden’s style.

Large family garden design plan

Large Family Garden

This large, sloping family garden in Hatch End, Middlesex cleverly combines both contemporary and traditional styles, divided by evergreen yew hedging. The contemporary entertainment space closest to the house features a natural sandstone patio, raised pool with adjacent raised beds, hardwood sun deck, step stone path, pergola and cut-away focal planting bays. To the rear, a sunken garden, with raised circular chamomile seat and round lily pond, creates a tranquil, contemplative space in which to relax

Distinctive box topiary spheres and Ligustrum ionandrum half standards feature throughout the garden, together with a creative blend of hardy perennials, hard-working shrubs and semi-mature trees. The planting design delivers rear-round interest with plenty of seasonal scene-stealers for visual impact through spring and summer.

Pinner, Middlesex Garden Design Plan for a Suburban Front Garden

Suburban Front Garden

This front garden in Pinner, Middlesex needed to make a statement, and be visually attractive from both the house and the roadside. The design also needed to work with the client’s existing driveway layout and paving. As low-maintenance was important, the existing lawn was removed in favour of gravel and slate chippings, with edging in the same materials as the driveway.

The result is a formal, courtyard-style front garden, featuring architectural, evergreen Prunus lusitanica topiary, complemented by distinctive purple- and blue-flowering perennials, with plants such as Salvia ‘Viola Klose’, Iris sibirica ‘Caesar’s Brother’ and Penstemon ‘Raven’ contrasting with the cooler palette of Hosta ‘Devon Green’ and Astrantia major ‘Alba’.

London courtyard garden design plan

City courtyard

A small, narrow north-facing London garden is transformed into a tranquil, courtyard garden complete with curving pathway and two seating areas that make the most of both morning and afternoon sun.

A gravel garden takes the place of lawn and is complemented by low-maintenance planting designed to exploit the semi-shade conditions.

Surrey Woodland Garden Design Plan

Woodland wonder

A large Surrey garden is turned into a modern woodland garden with several ‘rooms’ for relaxation and entertaining.

Pathways and decking link each garden area to the next. Succession planting ensures year-round seasonal interest, while thoughtfully-placed boulders and statuary add interest and form to the overall informal woodland glade style.

Middlesex Garden Design Plan where wildlife is most welcome!

Wildlife welcome

This suburban Middlesex garden already benefited from several mature trees.

These are supplemented with native planting attractive to birds, bees and butterflies to create a wildlife haven. An easy-to-maintain nectar bar is provided by a perennial meadow while an informal pond caters for aquatic wildlife.
