Traditional Country Garden

The garden of this converted farmhouse in Wigginton, Hertfordshire was literally a blank canvas save for one or two trees. The key requirement was for a layout and planting scheme that would blend sympathetically with the adjacent paddock and rural countryside beyond. A large area of lawn was a key requirement, together with the inclusion of a small edible garden and fruiting trees.

Recessed seating with traditional wooden benches feature around the garden providing different places from which to view and enjoy the garden. Pergolas and arches with climbing roses add a vertical accent, while espalier apples create sympathetic screening to the boundary adjoining the paddock area. A brick-edged parterre, complete with low box hedging, doubles as an ornamental edible garden. Future projects include the creation of a wildflower meadow, informal native hedging and a knot garden.
