Shade Garden

The area closest to the house in this large rear garden in west London is in shade for most of the day. The client wanted to transform the area into a space that would be pleasant to spend time in, irrespective of sun or shade. A new, level terraced area was required, with plenty of room for a garden table and chairs. Overgrown shrubs and trees were to be kept but pruned back and the existing lawn, which struggled in the shady conditions, was completely removed, in favour of wide borders. Finally, the new space had to connect with the main garden beyond and join up with an existing pathway.

To complement the exterior of the house, a traditional riven sandstone was used. Steps, flanked left and right by a water bowl with decorative pebbles and evergreen planting respectively, leads down to a curving pathway. A series of timber arches stagger the winding pathway which eventually links the shade garden with the large garden beyond. Woodland-style, shade-loving plants, such as ferns, bergenias, aquilegias, anemones and hellebores, provide interest throughout the seasons while three white-barked silver birches add to the secret garden feel and bring a sense of light into the garden.
